President Trump said Monday on social media that he's told the Defense Department to suspend military strikes against Iranian power plants after "good and productive talks," virtually extending his imposed deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump said the US would attack Iran's power plants if it didn't reopen the Strait of Hormuz in 48 hours. Iran responded on Sunday with is own threats.

President Trump said on Tuesday Iran made a valuable offer to reach a deal with the United States, in talks that Iran has denied are taking place. "We've won this. This war has been won," Trump said.

Even by the standards of US President Donald Trump’s rapidly shifting communications, the last 24 hours have been extraordinarily chaotic. Trump went from issuing a 48-hour ultimatum to Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz — threatening to attack the country’s power plans if it didn’t relent — to saying he had held productive talks with the leadership in Tehran that convinced him to call a five-day moratorium on such strikes.

The U.S. military is preparing to deploy around 1,000 troops from the 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East, according to a person with knowledge of the move who spoke on condition of anonymity.
